Prototypes made to your drawing

A prototype is where a design meets a real piece of metal, and it's usually where the questions start. We machine prototypes in our own workshop in Hamilton, from a single part upwards, on our 5 axis machine and our turning machines.

We work in plastics, copper, aluminium, stainless and hardened steel, and we hold ±0.01mm on most materials. Whether it's a bracket, a housing or a shaft, the person who prices it is one of the people who'll make it.

What to tell us when you ask for a prototype quote

Say it's a prototype. A one off is priced differently from a run of fifty, and we'd rather quote it as what it is.

Send the drawing, the material and the quantity, and tell us when you need it. If the design might still change, say that too, and tell us which dimensions are critical so we can put the effort where it counts.

If you think a batch might follow, tell us roughly how many. You don't have to commit to anything, it just gives us a fuller picture of the job.

We take DXF, DWG, STEP, IGES, STL, PDF, JPG and PNG files, up to four on the quote form and 4MB in total. If you've only got a sketch or a model so far, send that and we'll tell you what else we need.

Getting the most from a prototype

A prototype exists to answer a question, does it fit, does it work, can it be made this way. If you tell us what you're testing, we can pay extra attention to those features, and we can say if anything on the drawing looks like it could cause trouble in the next round.

Keep the drawing revision clear. When a second version follows, a revision number on each means we both know which part is which.

Checked, and kept private

We measure every part against your drawing before it leaves the workshop, prototypes included, and we can supply inspection paperwork such as a first article report if you need it.

Your drawings are kept confidential.

Need it fast?

Lead times depend on the part, the material and what's in the workshop, and we give you one with every price. If a prototype is holding up a project, say so on the form and phone us on 0141 647 5913. We'll turn it round as fast as the job allows.

Questions

Can you make just one part?

Yes. We machine everything from a single prototype to a full production batch.

What materials do you machine prototypes in?

Plastics, copper, aluminium, stainless and hardened steel. Tell us what the part has to do and we'll advise if you're not sure.

What do you need to quote a prototype?

The drawing, the material, the quantity and when you need it by. Mention that it's a prototype and which dimensions matter most.

Will you keep my drawings confidential?

Yes. Your drawings are kept confidential.

Can I get inspection paperwork for a prototype?

Yes, if your job needs it. We supply first article reports and inspection paperwork with the parts.

How quickly can you turn a prototype round?

It depends on the part, the material and the workshop's workload, and we give you a lead time we can hit with every price. For an urgent job, tell us on the form and phone the workshop.
